If you ever gone to Yogyakarta, you must have been familiar about — the Keraton of Yogyakarta. It’s a royal palace that is located in the middle of Yogyakarta. In this blog, we're going to talk about 4 Fun Facts about the Keraton of Yogyakarta. Stay tuned and find out more about the Keraton of Yogyakarta.
1). Did you know that the Keraton was built way back in 1755, and it’s still home to the Sultan of Yogyakarta and his family. Yes, the real family of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta still lives there until this day! But lucky for us, a big part of the palace is open to the public, and it’s a great destination to learn more about the Sultanate family. Except for the Abdi Dalem, we will cover that up really soon!
2). The Keraton Of Yogyakarta is also home to a fascinating collection of 23 royal carriages, each with different stories and some even used in a grand royal ceremony. Now, these beautiful crafted carriages are displayed in a special museum called the Wahanarata Museum located in the Keraton complex , offering visitors a unique and exciting look into the royal traditions and rich history of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. If you like carriages, you should visit the museum!
3). In the middle of the Northern Square (Alun-Alun Utara) of the Keraton of Yogyakarta, you'll find two sacred banyan (beringin) trees named Kiai Dewadaru on the west and Kiai Janadaru on the east. These trees aren’t just normal old trees—they’re full of meaning. They symbolize balance between the spiritual and the everyday world, and also the unity between the Sultan and his people (Manunggaling Kawula Gusti). Kiai Dewadaru (the tree on the west side) faces the Gedhe Kauman mosque, that symbolizes the importance of faith. While Kiai Janadaru (the tree on the east side), faces the Beringharjo market, that representing daily life and the people’s connection with the palace (Keraton of Yogyakarta).
4). Like I've promised earlier, we're going to cover up about the Abdi Dalem. We're going to split it up into 2 sections, the history, and the meaning of Abdi Dalem.
History
The story of the Abdi Dalem begins way back in 1755, when the Keraton of Yogyakrta was founded. These dedicated servants aren’t just palace helpers—they’re the heart and soul of the royal court itself. They are serving the Sultan with genuine sincerity and living by the Javanese values like noble character and peaceful harmony. The Abdi Dalem split again into two groups: the Abdi Dalem Dalem and the Abdi Dalem Prajurit. Each team has its own special mission—whether it’s taking care of daily palace life or protecting the royal family, they keep the spirit of the Keraton alive. Without the Abdi Dalem, the Keraton of Yogyakarta will just be a normal historical building...
Functionality
The Abdi Dalem have some pretty important—and pretty cool—jobs at the Yogyakarta Keraton. They keep everything running smoothly and making sure that the traditions stay alive. They are like the editors behind the movie we watched, handling all sorts of tasks to keep the royal world going. But they’re more than just workers—they’re the “culture keepers” of the community, leading by example with their manners and respect for tradition.
Do they have any specific duties, you may ask? There is no specific duties, they will do what they can do for example some will guard the sacred heirlooms, while others prepare for the royal ceremony, even some of them are making delicious dishes for royalty. So, in conclusion. No matter the task, the Abdi Dalem will do it with grateful and fully from their heart Source: https://pariwisata.jogjakota.go.id/detail/index/37507
